This week news came through that Ellen Degeneres has cancelled her long running talk show. Last year news began to spread about Ellen being one of the “meanest people alive”. A guy by the name of Kevin T Porter asked for anecdotes about the nasty side of the self-proclaimed “be kind” lady and was deluged with responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Any armchair critic could see the writing on the wall. After the shine came off the ratings tanked, guests pulled out, staff members were dumped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have been in situations in life, all too recently, where bullying has been rife. At a particular company I worked for the manager engaged in behaviour that one would probably characterize as gaslighting. Sending text messages to my phone every 30 minutes asking if I had completed a task. Writing messages to other company employees on the company’s slack channel asking them to follow me up. Sending out complex tasks that require a few days and stamping them as ASAP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
This individual had charm and those that weren’t tuned in were spellbound by him. He even managed to convince a company to fire one of their employees “you don’t need this guy, what value does he bring”, all because the person in question raised a valid point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Superficial charm is one of they attributes of psycopathy. Hearing the tales of Ellen I had flashbacks to some of my own encounters. Apparently Ellen fired someone, then begged them to come back, only to fire them 1 week later so that she could have the “last laugh”. Her bodyguard told her “not to look at her” and was cold and demeaning. Housemaids talk about Ellen putting matchsticks in strategic places and scolding anyone who didn’t pick them up, ostensibly to see if they had done a thorough job in cleaning. Staff members at her show were told to chew gum before talking to her and not to look her in the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course she can ham it up for the cameras! But once the cameras stop rolling the facade is put away in the box. It only takes a small crack for things to unravel. A small hairline fracture can widen and disintegrate the entire structure, and this is what happened to Ellen’s brand. Accusing Dakota of not inviting her to a party. She stood her ground and made an embarrassment of Ellen who dubiously was visiting George W Bush the same weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This set in motion a series of events. The twitter post, the former staff members, maids working in her house. The stories came out thick and fast until the crack became a PR chasm! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fast forward to today. Ellen has announced her last show, and I one for one couldn’t be happier. In some sense it’s an imputation of the events that I have gone through manifesting itself through a crooked celebrity who deserves to be given a smackdown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ellen claims that she was “no longer challenged”. This is bullshit! She claims that she would have left in the current season had the reason been the bullying claims. This too is bullshit! In order to save face one needs to continue on to avoid this conclusion and not give the press any satisfaction. In reality it’s like a deer being wounded by an arrow. The deer continues on for a few hundred more metres before it succumbs to it’s fate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
