Kyle and Jackie ImplOsion

The news of Kyle and Jackie O’s implosion at KIIS FM has been a sordid and messy saga.

The once “unbreakable” partnership (words Jackie used in her book) with Kyle Sandilands of over 25 years came to a bitter end of February 20, 2026.

I have listened to the audio that prompted the spectacular fallout between the breakfast show hosts.  It generally centered around Jackie O not being “focused” on her job. In the  8 minute audio clip it is apparent that Jackie was caught unprepared when prompted for comment on a topic with Kyle. This led to a very tense exchange between the pair. Kyle accusing Jackie of being “off with the fairies”.

I personally despise Kyle Sandliands, but that is not the point here. In somewhat defense of Kyle, the things said to Jackie during the segment seemed valid. Jackie O did appear somewhat dazed when thrown for comment and the producer sheepishly backed up that she was maybe a little too into the star signs. None of them bemoaned the interest she had in it, more that she was slipping in professionalism.

Jackie’s responses came across interchangeably as someone who had been stunned by the headlights and had their hand in the cookie jar.

I’m not saying what Kyle did was right. There are a few points to make here. Firstly this type of conversation about work performance is best left off air. The clinger, the show thrives on it’s rawness and relatability and keeping things 100% real. Two opposing forces at play.

The way in which Kyle dealt with Jackie is another concern, and I’m not sure how to phrase this in a gentle way. Kyle did not “read the room”. The very matter of fact bullet point delivery works (or can) work well amongst those who know when to pull themselves up by the bootstraps, cop it on the chin and allow this as a moment of self reflection and betterment. SAS Australia (to take an extreme example) employ this type of tactic to great effect. It stings, but sometimes it is necessary.

In performance reviews, I have been presented with things that I ought to do better with and I take it as an opportunity to acknowledge and improve (if stated with sound reasoning). Jackie is more free-spirited and this type of exchange comes across as rather nasty or “an attack” in her words. Kyle ought to have handled the valid criticisms with more more propriety.

So what happens next? Jackie O takes the week off work. Kyle is given the impression that once tensions simmer she will be back to work next week. Come Monday, no Jackie. She’s taking the next week off too. Bombshell!

Jackie O announces that she’s leaving the show for good citing that she “cannot continue to work with Kyle Sandilands”. Consequently the contract is terminated and an official statement is released to the ASX.

Many people on comment boards, particularly Facebook where I check most often are claiming that this is all just a “publicity stunt”. I will shoot down this “theory” with the following observations.

a) The exchange seems a little too genuine to be construed as some kind of carefully planned act. They may have had some publicity generating moments in the past, but to believe that this exchange was all careful concocted beforehand seems far fetched. There would be timing slip ups and various tells if it were pre-planned.

b) Taking devils advocate side on a), if this were phony and an elaborate ploy, then surely the submission of an official statement to the ASX would have wide ranging ramifications. Not in the least that any kind of market manipulation may be construed as insider trading, especially given that the A1N stock price shot up around 6% given the news. There are major penalties for corporate malfeasance, insider trading and the like.

c) Mad Fucking Witches. The activist group that has sought for many years to bring down the show (or perhaps just Kyle) for his off-color remarks that they find racist, bigoted, sexist among other things. There is a concentrated effort to bring forth their desire for this to happen by campaigning the shows advertisers to remove their slots on the show. And it has been rather effective.

With this in mind, any extra publicity (if we go with this line of argument) may well increase audience numbers (temporarily), but with advertiser numbers well down, it doesn’t translate into dollars so the increase in listenership is a moot point. The brand is already a poisoned chalice and ARN know it.

The Kyle and Jackie O show as it stands is over.

Or is it?

On Friday, Jackie O issued a bizarre and confusing statement that

I want to make one important point very clear: I did not quit or resign.

This flies in the face of the statement that was released by ARN. Had it been narrowed to an official release of the company only, it would still hold weight, but could be argued with – but the memorandum was released to the ASX. I would strongly suspect that someone from Jackie’s camp would have signed a document presented by ARN prior to release. ARN cannot send this out without having things signed off by the respective parties.

Here’s what I think happened

Jackie has had enough time to process things and the dust has settled. The shock, hurt and betrayal feeling have subsided. She is now in the “What I have done to myself” phase. Looking at a  fun and lucrative FM radio job that earns $10M a year + revenue share. This is a salary that exceeds many highly skilled professions, such as surgeon or CEOs of large companies.

I hazard to say that we all have fracas with others at work. You are lucky if you get by with very few. Jackie is already substantially wealthy, but nonetheless is still staring down the barrel of a once-in-a-lifetime gig drawing to a close due to a (perhaps rightly) emotional response to criticism.

ARN subcontract the Kyle and Jackie O show. They are essentially purchasing a product from an external supplier. Unless aggravated by ARN, then any internal issues ought to be dealt with by the suppliers (Hendersen Media and Quasar Media Services) – especially any instances of unsafe work environment. Given that ARN employ censors, it can be shown that ARN, at least in part, are playing their role. Can Jackie show that they aided or abetted his behavior, particularly given the style of their program that is captured in their contractual arrangement.

The backpedaling at this point seems furious. I wonder if there exists a cooling off period to unwind what has already been done? Given the ASX statements it seems a real mess!

Kyle has been asked to “remedy the situation” from his end, but as many have commented,  how on earth is he supposed to actually do this? He has been effectively muzzled by the radio station, being suspended for “serious misconduct”.

This breach seems rather tenuous at best, given that Kyle has admonished Jackie in the past about her professionalism and has received no consequences and secondly the company acknowledges  at a contractual level that Kyle is a “maverick” presenter and must be aware of the consequences of his brand of radio.

What happens next, will wait and see. Both presenters are in legal wrangling mode. Kyle to fight the claim that he was in breach, and possibly a settlement if he is terminated. I think he has a strong position to fight from. Jackie is trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube and pretend this never happened – ala George Costanza from Seinfeld.

Jackie has switched gears from processing the hurt from Kyles remarks and pivoting to “heartbreak” and “shock” that the show may be coming to an end. The antagonist seems to be switching from Kyle to the radio station itself. Both are lawyering up.

ARN are in a tenuous position. Whilst appearing to be mediators to their stars (who are not direct employees), a supremely golden goose moment has landed on their lap –  and unofficial chatter from employees has backed this theory up. “Overjoyed” and “relieved” as reported by SMH. It may be a way to reset a now clearly unsustainable contract that doesn’t bring in anywhere close to the money they need to make this venture profitable.
